NLCE worked as M&E Engineers on this first Publicly Procured Project (PPP) with Balfour Beatty and JJ Rhatigan & Co. This project is part of a 14-centre bundle and was the first PPP to be delivered using Building Information Modelling (BIM) Level 2. We designed the exemplar design for the Dungarvan Primary Care Centre, upon which all the other centres were based. Through our knowledge of HTM and HBN codes we were able to deliver award winning designs and excellent patient experiences.
The five centres in the bundle which NLCE teams have successfully completed are Dungarvan, Kilcock, Wexford, Waterford, and Carrick-On-Suir. The development of these sites will reduce the numbers having to go to a hospital for appointments and take a large amount of pressure off already stretched hospital services. Many users of these facilities have compromised immune systems and special medical needs, our designs include lighting installations and natural daylight designs sympathetic to circadian rhythm, and filtered air to reduce airborne infections.
The Waterford Primary Care Centre project involved the construction of a part 2 storey and part 3 storey healthcare facility (4700m2) situated on the grounds of the existing St Otteran’s Hospital. The development included a Grade A specification fit out to facilitate a physio department, dental department, GP department including x-ray facilities, occupational therapy, speech and language, mental health department and early intervention centre.
We are very proud that the Waterford Primary Care Centre won gold at the 2019 Irish Construction Excellence Awards in the Education or Healthcare Building Category.
